Sazali's Raya bonus
Bodybuilder in line for reward after winning world title

Malaysia's top bodybuilder Sazali Samad has plenty to cheer about when he welcomes the first day of the Syawal month with his close family members at home today. Sazali made the country proud when he beat 18 contestants to bag the Mr Universe title in the bantamweight division of the World Amateur Body-building Championship in Moscow last Sunday.

Among those in the field were six-time world champion Anwar El Amawy of Egypt and four-time world champion Jose Santos of Brazil. It was Sazali's second world crown after winning the same competition when it was held in Malacca in 2000.

And he can now look forward to being rewarded with RM20.000 under the National Sports Council (NSC) incentive scheme.

NSC director of international preparations Ahmad Shapawi lsmail confirmed the amount and said they appreciate the effort Sazali has put in all this while in his chosen discipline. "Sazali continued with his training despite the fasting month and he had to made a lot of sacrifices, We decided to put him under the Gemilang 2006 programme squad and footed the bills for his food supplements. "His achievement in Moscow was a pleasant surprise for us. We were targeting him to strike gold in the 2006 Asian Games in Busan. "Now, we hope he will continue to do well in the next two years." Sazali can expect to receive the award during the NSCs Hari Raya open house on Nov 23.

Sazali, who is with the Royal Malaysian Police Force (PDRM), views the reward from NSC as recognition of his effort.

"I wish to thank NSC director general Datuk Wira Mazlan Ahmad, PDRM and all those who have supported me all this while. This is one of the best Hari Raya gift for me. It will inspire me to continue training harder and defend my Mr Universe title in Shanghai next year," said Sazali, who won his fifth Mr Asia title in Bahrain two months ago. His triumph in Moscow has placed him as a strong contender to win the
2084 National Sportsman of the Year Award.

Sazali also has an extra reason to look forward, to this year's Hari Raya celebrations, with the addition of a new family member. His wife Hashrine Hashim, 34, gave birth to their third son Muhammad Hisyamuddin on Aug 8, which is coincidentally, also Sazali's birthday. Yesterday Sazali returned home with his family
to his parent's house in Batu Pahat for the festival. 'This will
be a wonderful Hari Raya for me. I
have a third son and ironically, both of us will celebrate our birthday on the same day.

"I believe his arrival brought me luck and enable me to win my second world title," said the proud father.

Bodybuilder Sazali wins his third Mr Universe crown

PETALING JAYA: Bodybuilder Sazali Samad created history for Malaysia when he won his third Mr Universe title in the 60th edition of the world amateur championships in Ostrava, the Czech Republic, on Sunday night.

Sazali, competing in the below 65kg bantamweight category involving 20 participants, survived three elimination rounds.

In the final, Sazali defeated five-time champion Jose Carlos Santos of Brazil and Anwar Ahmed Mohamad of Egypt to the title.

It is the third time that Sazali has won the bantamweight world title and he is also the first Malaysian in the history of bodybuilding to do so.

Sazali took his first title when Malaysia hosted the championships in 2000 and he repeated the feat in Moscow in 2004. He was the silver medallist in last year’s championships in Shanghai.

The first Malaysian to win a world title was Clancy Ang in 1962.

“I am really excited to win the world title for the third time,” said Sazali in a telephone interview from Ostrava shortly after he was declared the winner.

“I had a close fight with the Brazilian, who was the winner last year. It was the motivation from the National Sports Council (NSC), my association and American coach Milos Sarcev that gave me the confidence to push myself to do well.”

For the 38-year-old, the success was just reward for having to cut short his Hari Raya celebrations with his family. Sazali only spent the first day of Hari Raya with his family in his hometown of Batu Pahat before leaving for Ostrava.

Winning the world title has also lifted his confidence to aim for an Asian Games gold medal in Doha in December. He is a five-time Mr Asia and expectations are high on Sazali to succeed in Doha.

Sazali, who is a policeman in Bukit Aman, said that he would not rest on his laurels.

“It means a lot for the country and for me that I do well in Doha. This is going to be my first Asian Games and I plan to train even harder,” he said.

Sazali did not compete in the 2002 Busan Asiad because he was serving a six-month suspension imposed by the Asian Bodybuilding Federation (ABF) for appearing in a dietary supplement advertisement.

Malaysia were also represented at the world championships by Doha Asiad-bound Liaw Teck Leong. But the 2002 Busan Asiad silver medallist did not make the semi-finals of the below 85kg middleweight category.

Sazali and Teck Leong will be heading for California for a three-week physical and conditioning stint under Sarcev.
