Loga Alleycats meninggal dunia

PULAU PINANG 4 Jun – ‘‘Andainya aku pergi dulu sebelummu, janganlah kau bersedih hati.

‘‘Loga suka dengar lagu-lagunya. Sepanjang masa lagu dimainkan, Loga sentiasa tersenyum,” ujar Kevin.

Loga, Alleycats lambang perpaduan kaum

Sebut sahaja dendangan lagu-lagu mereka antaranya Hingga Akhir Nanti, Sekuntum Mawar Merah Sebuah Puisi, Gerimis Senja, Seribu Bintang, Luka Lama Terguris Kembali, Noktah Terakhir, Dalam Kerinduan, Kerana, Layang-Layang Terputus Talinya, Jika Kau Bercinta Lagi, Sampaikan Salam Cintaku - semuanya menggamit naluri.

Selamat tinggal, aku mengundurkan diri.

Aku mengundurkan diri".

Alor Star.

Loga Alleycats mati barah paru-paru

Nostalgia: Senandung Semalam buat Loga
Oleh Zainuri Misfar

Pemergian penyanyi kedua Alleycats amat dirasai

Loga of Alleycats stricken with cancer

PENANG: Loganathan Arumugam (pic) of the Alleycats has been diagnosed with lung cancer and was admitted to the Mount Miriam Hospital on Saturday.

His elder brother, David, said Loganathan or Loga as he is fondly called, was diagnosed with cancer eight months ago.

“He had been having a very bad cough for a year,” said David, 57, adding that Loga's condition was bad and that “he is trying his best to fight this.”

This was the first time Loga, 54, has been admitted to the hospital.
“I love my brother, and I pray and hope he gets well. I hope his fans and fellow Malaysians will pray for his fast recovery,'' said David.

He said Loga was still able to joke and smile despite his pain.
Loga is married, with a 23-year-old son and a 20-year-old daughter.

“He is a fighter and once he pulls out of this, the first thing he wants to do is to get back on stage and even work with children and teenagers,'' said David.

The Alleycats, formed here in 1969, has been entertaining fans around the country, and in Singapore and Indonesia for 30 years. The group started by playing in clubs around the country before signing a recording deal with PolyGram Records in 1978.

The Alleycats have 29 albums to their credit. They are one of Malaysia's favourite bands with evergreen hits like Sampaikan Salam, Andainya Aku Pergi Dulu Sebelum Mu and Sekuntum Mawar Merah.

Tributes pour in for Loganathan

> I WAS shocked and saddened to read in The Star's website of the passing away of Loganathan Arumugam of the popular Malaysian pop group Alleycats.

I have known Loga and his elder brother David for almost 30 years and have tremendous respect for them. Not only are they talented, but their contribution to the local music industry is unrivalled. If anyone should receive awards from the Government or royalty, it should be the Alleycats.

Loga and David have been an inspiration to us all but I think most of us didn't realise he was fighting cancer the last six months or so. Loga has been suffering and yet the Alleycats have worked so hard to entertain millions of us with their unique brand of music complete with their Afro hair styles.

Loga, you will be thoroughly missed but not forgotten. We're pretty sure that you will find eternal peace in your Highway to the Stars.

J. CARLOS,
Petaling Jaya.

> I AM sad to read about the passing away of Loganathan Arumugam of the Alleycats.

While the Alleycats never achieved international stardom on the English-speaking music scene, though hugely popular in Malaysia, I honestly believe their talents equalled some of the world's best. At one time I thought they sounded better than the Bee Gees, in some of their performances.

I shall miss Loga’s superb flute playing and singing; and like what the late Maurice Gibb was to the Bee Gees, his loss will be similar to the Alleycats – simply irreplaceable. His death marks the passing of one of the country's great musical talents.

STEVE OH,
Perth, Australia.

A true legend
By NANTHA KUMAR

Alleycats co-vocalist Loga succumbed to cancer yesterday, but his legacy to the Malaysian music industry continues.

The younger generation cannot be expected to recall the exploits of the Alleycats, an enduring music heavyweight that is now a faintly-familiar name in the dusty annals of the Malaysian music industry.

The MTV crowd wouldn’t have even been aware of the passing of a true Malaysian music legend.
However, the seasoned listeners amongst us would have known by now that Loganathan Arumugam or simply Loga, as he was popularly known in the music fraternity, passed away yesterday in Penang after a struggle against lung cancer. He was 54.

A question that has persisted among older music enthusiasts is the exact role that Loga played within Alleycats. We have known him as the vocalist – back-up or lead – in all of the group’s gigs.

“David (Arumugam, Loga’s bandmate and elder brother) takes care of the finances, hotels and he was the leader of the band as well as its spokesperson. But Loga was 100% in charge of the band’s music. He decided the venue for our gigs, songs that we were going to play, the theme for the night and everything else connected with the music (album producers, etc). Loga worked very closely with the producer in determining the music,” said Ramesh Kandasamy, who served as the Alleycats’ guitarist for eight years.

He remembers Loga as a “jovial” person and one of the best singers he has ever known.

There is no doubt that the zest for life that Loga exuded was unmistakable and infectious. Even when he was lending his vocals or hamming it up with a tambourine, or producing those funny little jigs that became part of his personal repertoire, his famous smile never faded.

But, as Ramesh recalled, there was more to the man that his on-stage personality suggested.
Those who have encountered Loga will remember him as the affable musician with a ready “hello” for anyone.

Sadly, not many are aware of how significant the contributions of Loga and David have been towards grooming the present set of Malaysian musicians.

For musicians who grew up in the 1980s, joining the Alleycats was a means to stardom. There are still many within the Indian music arena who have been inspired by and continue to look up to Loga and the Alleycats.

“It is impossible to find anyone who has not heard of the Alleycats within the Indian community, never mind the homegrown musicians.

“When I was the manager of Lock-up (one of the pioneering bands of the Indian music scene), we approached Polygram for permission to remake one of Alleycats’ songs.

We got the approval in record time – we learned later that the band actually instructed that permission be given without heavy financial bearing upon us,” said A. Gopalkrishnan, the president of the Indian Recording Industry of Malaysia.

“We don’t know whether (the instruction) came from Loga or David but we will always remember that ... Lock-up was virtually unknown back then and the support
Alleycats provided was invaluable.

“Over the years, we learned that there was none of the fuss associated with big-name musicians when it came to the Alleycats ... only encouragement. In fact, the group was genuinely concerned about the growth of the Indian musicians and whenever our paths crossed, we could see that the brothers were always ready to give us a boost,” he added.

The chairman of the Music Council of Malaysia, Datuk Rahman Hassan, remembers Loga as “a committed, passionate musician ... and easy to be around with.”

Rahman is not alone: we may not have personally known Loga but at the end of any Alleycats gig, we left with the feeling of having been embraced by genuine warmth. The distance did not matter as the smile had a way of touching you. And it will remain so...

Alleycats’ Loga dies

PENANG: Loganathan Arumugam of the Alleycats, or Loga as he was fondly called, has died from lung cancer.

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/8101/03logaui0.jpg

Loga: Always believed he would beat the disease

The singer-flutist died at Mount Miriam Hospital here at 10.50am yesterday. He was 54.

His wife Susan Lovie, 51, said her husband was a fighter to the end.
“He always believed he would beat the disease and was very excited about recording a full orchestral album and a Tamil album with the band once he recovered.

“Loga was sure he would be back on stage by October, and had even planned to go on a cruise with me,” she said.

She said Loga had been suffering from a bad cough for about a year, but was diagnosed with lung cancer only eight months ago.

“We went to so many doctors and none of them could tell us what was wrong until he was sent for a CT scan. By then, the cancer was already in the third stage.

“He never felt sorry for himself – he just said, 'now that we know, let's deal with it'.

“Before he closed his eyes for the last time, he smiled and told me to be strong,” she said.

“I know he would want his fans to keep on supporting the Alleycats. He was with the band for more than three decades – even longer than our marriage.

“As long as you keep listening to his music, Loga will continue to live on,” she said.

Loga was admitted to the hospital on Saturday.

He leaves behind a son, L. Vigneswaran, 24, and daughter, L. Priyadashini, 19.

The Alleycats, formed here in 1969, have entertained fans around the country, and in Singapore, Hong Kong and Indonesia, for over 30 years.

The group started by playing in clubs around the country before signing a recording deal with PolyGram Records in 1978.
The Alleycats have 30 albums to their credit and are one of Malaysia’s favourite bands, with evergreen hits like Sampaikan Salam, Andainya Aku Pergi Dulu Sebelum Mu and Sekuntum Mawar Merah.

Loga's brother and Alleycats' frontman David Arumugam, 57, said the band would fulfil Loga’s last wish of recording a full orchestral album, and a Tamil album for the band's Indian fans.
He said the albums would be dedicated to Loga.

“Perhaps the proceeds can be given to charity in honour of my brother,” he said.

A distressed David said he had lost a brother, band-mate and business partner.

“We were very close and though I will miss him, the Alleycats will continue to make music – it is what he would have wanted,” he said, adding that his nine other siblings were with Loga before he died.

“He waited for me to arrive at the hospital before taking his last breath. The rest of the family were all there but I was out running an errand when I got a call saying that my brother was not going to make it,” he said.
Alleycats' lead guitarist Din Nazaruddin, 54, described the loss as an “unbearable heartache.”

To mark the sad event, SuriaFM aired songs by the band every hour yesterday.

“The station felt the need to do this because Loga was a member of a band that is a legend in Malaysia,” SuriaFM chief operating officer Engku Emran Engku Zainal Abidin said.

The cortege will leave Loga's house at No. 2, Jalan Azyze in Tanjung Bungah for the Batu Lanchang crematorium at 11am tomorrow.

Special TV1 tribute to Loga of Alleycats
By FLORENCE A.SAMY

PETALING JAYA: Those wishing to pay homage to Loganathan Arumugam of the Alleycats who passed away on Monday can do so by sending an SMS message during a special tribute programme, Loga Dalam Kenangan (Loga in Memory).

TV1 will be airing the three-part special programme in memory of Loganathan, better known as Loga, at 8.45pm Wednesday night.
The 54-year-old singer-flautist died Monday morning from lung cancer.

Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin said the tribute was not only to recognise Loga's contribution to the nation and the music industry but also to give people an opportunity air their feelings of sadness over his death.

"He has touched millions of people throughout his life and we want to give an opportunity for people to pay their tribute," he said, adding that they had already received permission from Loga's family to air the show.

The 45-minute programme would be conducted in Bahasa Malaysia and would aired on the same slot over three weeks, said RTM TV production director Rokiah Norma Mohd Ramli.

Man with a smile
By JASON CHEAH

The Alleycats’ late co-vocalist Loga will forever remain one of Malaysia’s best-loved musicians.

There was no shortage of tributes to Loganathan Arumugam, or simply Loga to adoring fans of the Alleycats, who passed away on Monday. He succumbed to lung cancer and left us at the age of 54 – perhaps, a little too soon for someone who had many more good years to offer in the music scene.

Even on his hospital bed, Loga’s talent and desire to make music never faded as seen by the resilient Penang-born musician’s ambition to record an orchestral album and a Tamil release with the Alleycats.

From blogs to websites and everyday conversations, Loga’s illness and death was the topic for many fans. The tributes won’t be stopping any time soon – a testimony to the Alleycats influence on nearly 40 years of music-making.

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/7757/f19logame7.jpg

Backstage hospitality: Loga always had time for fans, as seen during this gig in Ipoh in 1997.

This was the band that brought Malay pop music to all the races in this country, breaking through barriers and garnering respect and acclaim from all quarters since the late 1970s.

Alongside brother David, Loga was the central force of the Alleycats – often supplying the killer harmonies and deft musicianship that made the band an accomplished and inspired outlet for Malay pop.

What Loga achieved with the Alleycats wasn’t merely pop success – he was part of a pop movement that retained showbiz, professionalism and popularity without losing grassroots support. Whether on the big stage or a club gig, you could always have a conversation with Loga and he was never short of a handshake or a smile for anyone...

Here’s what some industry insiders have to say:

Freddie Fernandez
(Maestro Talent & Management CEO)

The Alleycats left a mark, and not just in the club/ pub scene. I remember them playing at the Carmen’s Inn in the then-Merlin Hotel in Penang (in the 1970s). When they moved into the recording scene (in 1978), they made their mark there, too.

While David was the lead vocalist, Loga had his place, too (one of their classic tracks Suara Kekasih had Loga on lead vocals. It was their visual impact – with the Afro phenomenon – that caught the eye of fans, and their showmanship.

They were exciting to watch, although age caught up with them, they remained true to their art form. I only managed five years (Fernandez was with the band The Revolvers in the mid-1970s) and first performed alongside the Alleycats at the Tin Mine Disco (at the then KL Hilton). I was 21 and back then, bands were the thing. We had lots of good fun. He had a smile for everyone.

Eric Yeo
(former PolyGram managing director)

The Alleycats were the hottest live act around in the 1970s and as PolyGram’s A&R manager then, I was convinced that they had a recording career future. In 1978, I got them signed to PolyGram after tracking them down in Singapore, where they were on a club stint.

Those were exciting times as David and Loga were in the same age group as me. We got along well and they picked me to produce all their albums until 1988. It’s true that David is the voice of the Alleycats – but Loga’s contributions were equally important. Loga had a beautiful voice, and his harmonies were very unique. He was also a disciplined musician.

As a person, Loga was like a brother to me ... we just clicked from the start despite him being the more reserved of the brothers. Besides having a sharp compositional mind, he was always with a book, a very intellectual guy.

Like a true 1960s child, he liked his music and movies. When we used to hang out, he would be sharing all this information. As for music, Loga knew a great deal about the great bands of the time, but he was always a Beatles fan. He also valued music with a message, often picking up conversation with topics like John Lennon and (Bob) Dylan whenever we met.

They don’t make maverick characters like Loga any longer, and he will be deeply missed.
Paul Augustin
(Capricorn Connections director)
We used to watch them play (as teenagers) in Penang.

They were the band, and they set the standard, we put them on a pedestal.

Their whole concept was not only the music. They had a package – and they appealed to all races, and were practically a household name. They recorded almost exclusively in Malay. (The band had one English album release that apparently flopped.)

For fans, the passing of Loga is like when the Bee Gees lost Maurice Gibb, and I feel a chapter has been closed. What other band has that kind of command (in this country)?”

R.S. Murthi
(writer, musician)

I remember my first encounter with the Alleycats in the 1970s. The year: 1973. The place: Bukit Mertajam High School’s ramshackle hall. The event: School’s annual talentime final. (High School Idol!)

I can’t remember whether they came on before or after the results were announced, but the moment the Alleycats took the stage, they blew away every nerdy kid in the hall, including this naive 14-year-old, who got booed and booted out in one of the early rounds of the contest.

Even before they became a national pop sensation in the late 1970s, the Alleycats were already Penang’s hottest live rock act. The mention of their name alone got some kids juiced!

They played a 30-minute set after two other bands, including a heavy metal outfit whose guitarist was a local legend (his bare-backed Mat Salleh girlfriend sat in the front row, much to our endless enchantment). And they made quite an impression with their professionalism, especially David (his gf was also in tow) who also played drums, and Loga, who was upfront singing and handling percussion duties.

It was obvious even then – they did a memorable version of Three Dog Night’s Pieces of April, among other hits of the era – that the brothers’ tight collaborative spirit was the key to their dynamism on stage.

It’s hard to think what the group would be like without that symbiotic musical partnership now that Loga is gone.

PENANG: Diehard fans of the Alleycats came from as far as Singapore to join hundreds of mourners to pay their last respects to Loganathan Arumugam.

A. Prakash and his friend rushed to Penang from Singapore on Monday immediately after learning that Loga died of lung cancer.
“We have been here for three days to pay our last respects to a legend. We are proud of his achievement.

“We will set up a website to keep his memories and songs alive,” said Prakash, 35.

The remains of Loganathan, who is popularly known as Loga, was cremated at Batu Lanchang crematorium at 11am on Wednesday.
Fans and well-wishers were at Loga’s family house in Jalan Azyz in Tanjung Bungah as early as 8.30am.

Also present were popular singer Datuk D.J. Dave, former Miss Malaysia and radio deejay Yasmin Yusoff and comedian Accapan.

Loga’s only son Vigneshwaran and relatives led the burial ceremony according to Hindu rites at 10.15am.

Loga, 54, also left behind wife Susan and daughter Priyadashini.
Mega Fortune Bikers Club convoy of big bikers escorted the cortege to the crematorium.

Persatuan Karyawan president Freddie Fernandez said Loga was among the very few Indians who had become a national icon.
“Loga was not only active in music. He was also very active in Karyawan.

“We encourage fellow Indians to emulate Loga and become national icons,” he said. PBA Holdings Bhd (PBAHB) chief executive officer Jaseni Maidinsa said he had known Loga since 1960s.

“I was 13-years-old then. We became close friends. Love for music bound us together,” he said, adding that Loga was the brains behind Alleycats.

“Alleycats started singing at Carmens ,” he said.
Jaseni said Alleycats had a big break, when an Australian deejay spotted their talent during a live performance in Penang in the late 1960s.

“The Australian deejay requested a demo tape from Alleycats. Their songs were aired in Australian radio. The rest is history,” he said.

Jaseni was the only non-family member who was with Loga when he drew his last breath at the Mount Miriam Hospital.

“After Tan Sri P. Ramlee, I can't think of other big names in entertainment industry who could bridge the racial barrier except the Alleycats,” he said.

Thanks for the memories, Loga
By SOO EWE JIN

THE Arumugam brothers, David and Loganathan, with their Afro hairstyles and unique repertoire of Malay songs, entertained Malay-sians in truly muhibbah style for more than three decades.
On Monday morning, one voice fell silent.

Loga, the younger brother at 54, passed away at the Mount Miriam Hospital in Penang after an eight-month battle with lung cancer.

News of his ailment became public knowledge only when The Star published a report in its Monday edition, with a poignant plea from David: “I love my brother, and I pray and hope he gets well. I hope his fans and fellow Malaysians will pray for his fast recovery.”

http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/5241/n36alleycatswx1.jpg

Pic : The Arumugam brothers wowing fans during a concert in Kuching in 2004.

No doubt his fans and fellow Malaysians did just that, pray.
But when news of Loga’s passing was flashed via SMS and on Star Online and other portals, the pray-ers turned to tears.

The first time I watched The Alleycats live in concert was way back in 1976 when my school Interact Club organised a charity concert at the Dewan Sri Pinang in Penang.

It was a sold-out concert, and we organisers decided to allow even non-ticket holders to enter, to prevent any trouble. The Alleycats were then the hottest band in town – homegrown musicians who were the pride of Penang.

Over the years, they took the nation and countries in the region, like Singapore and Indonesia, by storm.

They had hit after hit and their songs connected with everyone.
One of the country’s most prolific composers M. Nasir was to successfully figure out the winning combination that gave The Alley-cats the winning edge.

Their records were a huge success.
Even after they stopped conquering the charts, they continued to draw the faithful to their live performances.

The Alleycats, over the years, did not change much in terms of the kind of music and their style of delivery.

Loga and David switched places as lead vocalist very easily. If one was up front, the other was backing up, and vice versa.

Be it at a major concert, or a pub or a small club,
The Alleycats had a powerful rapport with their fans.
Those who watched them perform on some of the concerts broadcast over RTM saw how they would go to members of the audience and invite them to sing.

And everyone, no matter their ethnicity, knew the words to their songs.

Here was a group comprising Indian and Chinese members belting out Malay numbers that every Malaysian loved to sing along with.
While on the club circuit, they were also admired for their renditions of the works of other artistes.

The Alleycats had other members in the band but it was definitely the Arumugam brothers who defined the band.

The last time I saw The Alleycats live was just a few months ago, at the Royale Bintang, The Curve, in Damansara Mutiara, Petaling Jaya.
It was a night out for my wife and me, and we noticed that everyone in the audience was, well, in our age group.

Everyone could sing along to every tune they dished out. More importantly, it was a truly muhibbah crowd.

Such is the legacy of the Alleycats. They made us proud to be Malaysians.

I could suggest many lyrics from their songs that might be appropriate for this moment but perhaps, the best words would be the two words these brothers would say in the way only they could when they heard the applause - T’rima Kaaasih! (the tone going upwards).

Yes indeed. Terima Kasih, Loga. And thanks for the memories.

Three-part TV tribute to Loga starts tonight

KUALA LUMPUR: A three-part programme in tribute to the late Loganathan Arumugam, better-known as Loga of vintage group The Alleycats, will be aired over national television.

The first of the RTM1 programmes will be shown at 8.45pm today, to recognise his contribution to the country’s music industry and also to give his fans their say about the entertainer, who died of lung cancer on Monday. He was 54.
The next two parts, also 15 minutes each, will be aired over the next two weeks in the same time slot.

“He touched millions of people in his lifetime. We want to give people an opportunity to pay tribute,” said Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin, adding that Radio Television Malaysia had received the family permission to air the show, Loga Dalam Kenangan (Loga in Memory).

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/3005/p12meenaha9.jpg

Words of consolation: Samy Vellu comforting Meenambal during his visit to pay last respects to Loga yesterday.

Loga and his brother David were the predominant figures in the group that was formed in Penang in 1969, making it one of the longest-surviving bands in the country.
With 30 albums to their name, the group was due to record a full orchestral album and a Tamil album later this year.

RTM TV production director Rokiah Norma said the tribute programme would compile Loga’s personal life, his music and songs he performed with The Alleycats, such Jika Kau Bercinta Lagi, Sekuntum Mawar Merah, A Whiter Shade of Pale and Down Memory Lane,” she said.

She added that RTM stations Traxx FM, Minnal FM and KL FM were also having special programmes in memory of Loga, which would include tributes from fellow artistes.

Those who wish to send an SMS can forward it to 32776. The messages will be flashed as crawlers at the bottom of the TV screen.

In PENANG, politicians and entertainment luminaries were among those who were at Loga’s family house in Tanjung Bungah to pay their last respects to him and to extend condolences to the bereaved family.

Among them were Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and singer Nash from classic rock band Lefthanded.

Samy Vellu, who is MIC president, said the party would discuss at its next meeting on how to honour Loga, whose mother, Meenambal Arumugam, 82, has been a long-time MIC member.

Meenambal said: “Even when my husband passed away five years ago, I did not feel such pain. He was 83. But my Loga was only 54 years old – so young. To me, Loga will always be my little boy.

“Of all my 11 children, he was the closest to me.”

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/6010/nashwx9.jpg

Celebrity concern: Nash and his wife Sosilawati Lawiya extending their condolences to David at the family house in Penang yesterday.

David, the group’s front man, said the band hired a part-time musician to play Loga’s part as flutist and percussionist since he got sick eight months ago.

The new member will continue on following Loga’s death but “no one can replace Loga”.

Loga’s daughter, L. Priyadashini, 19, said she would continue her father’s legacy.

“The last time I sang with my dad was in October at the Brasil 68 restaurant where I perform on Fridays and Saturdays. He would always give me singing tips and I really valued his feedback. He told me the music business was tough but at the same time, he was always very encouraging,” she said.

The cortege will leave Loga’s house at No. 2, Jalan Azyze in Tanjung Bungah for the Batu Lanchang crematorium at 11am today. For details, call 012-399 1677 (Sabrina).

Loga’s death a big loss to music world

MOST of my generation, whose formative years were in the 70s and 80s, have grown up with the music of Alleycats, one of the most popular groups then.

With the death of Loga, one half of the Alleycat brothers, the music scene has lost a gifted singer who brought a lot of joy to the music world.

Really, nobody sings like the Alleycats. Their songs are full of beautiful words that can pull at one’s heartstrings. They can be considered the Bee Gees of Malaysia.

Remembering Loga and Alleycats

>LOGA was a respectable entertainer whose music and songs remained popular for more than two decades.

I was in my early teens in the 70s when I started listening to Alleycats. Today, in 2007, my children are listening to their songs which are even famous in Singapore.

I hope that Loga Arumugam will be posthumously awarded a Datukship for his contribution to and success in the music industry.
Similar respect and title should also be given to his brother David Arumugam.

DIE-HARD FAN, Penang.

>NOT long ago we invited the Alleycats to perform at a company function and their performance blew us all away.

It kept many of us on our feet dancing away.

When Loga sang Jika Kau Bercinta Lagi the whole function room went silent to appreciate the beautiful sound of his voice.

I can recall many great performances by Alleycats, including the one for the Governor of Penang along with the Platters from the US.

RAJAM, Penang.

>I WOULD like to point out something that may have been forgotten. It was not only Loga and David that forged the Alleycats. There was a third brother, Shanmugam, who was also with the band for over three decades.

Together, the three brothers transcended race, religion and language to become the best band in Malaysia!

SAD FAN, Penang.

>I REMEMBER frequenting the Pan Pacific Hotel (in Singapore) with my pals to support the Alleycats and found them just as good (if not better) than our local bands. Loga will be missed from his supporters across the Causeway.

Rest in Peace, Bro!

JAMES & PALS, Singapore.

>LATE Loga, U are a Greate Artiste! Obviously, U are good and nobody can replace U! Going to miss your voice ... eventually!! Alleycats is power becoz of U and David!

1,000 beri hormat
Oleh Rudy Syareme Sheriffudin

Sanak saudara, rakan artis, peminat Loga berkumpul sejak jam 8 pagi

Ketika upacara sedang berlangsung beberapa peminat mengalirkan air mata tanda kesedihan.

Yasmin, 52, ketika ditemui berkata, dia berkenalan dengan mendiang Loga kira-kira 29 tahun lalu sewaktu mendiang bersama syarikat rakaman Polygram, manakala dia sendiri bersama Warner Music.

Suara emas Loga sukar dicari ganti
Oleh Norhadiani Baharom

FITRAH hidup, setiap bernyawa pasti menemui ajal.

Jelas Freddie, dia mengenali Loga dan David sekitar awal 70-an.

Namun setiap kali bertemu bagi menjayakan program TV atau konsert dia pasti mengusik saya dengan panggilan ‘my favourite girl’ atau ‘she is my girl’.

‘Alleycats Perlis’ turut bersedih

Unforgettable Loganathan

THE ailing Malaysian music industry suffered a huge loss with the demise of Loganathan Arumugam due to lung cancer on Monday.

Loganathan or Loga, 55, will be remembered as a legend in our music scene for his tireless involvement with Alleycats.
He was a vocalist and played the flute with the band that was formed in 1969 in Penang.

As an artiste, Loga not only had talent, he possessed charisma and character qualities lacking in many of our singers today.

Like his elder brother David, Loga could captivate an audience with his mesmerising voice.

As a person, Loga was down-to-earth, jovial and fun-loving .

He would always make time for people who wanted to see him despite his busy schedule.

I had the privilege of chatting with Loga on several occasions at clubs in the city, including Planet Hollywood.

Loga and David would take the time to talk to me and my friends in between their gig breaks.

They would even try to accommodate our requests rock numbers which the Alleycats excelled in.

We also got a bit ‘naughty’ at times by asking them to play some rare rock and blues numbers which they could not really play! Loga and David, however, always took our ‘cheekiness’ in the right spirit.

Alleycats started as a rock band who travelled to Hong Kong, Indonesia and Singapore to ply their trade.

As accommodating as Loga and Alleycats were, they could not always entertain our requests.

They had to think of their fans who loved their Malay numbers like Se Kuntum Mawar Merah and Senandung Semalam.

These numbers are evergreens and signature hits of the Alleycats.

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to attend an Alleycats do at a hotel lounge in Petaling Jaya but unfortunately, Loga was not there.

A band member told me with much sadness that he was ill.

Loga will be sorely missed but the enduring quality of the Alleycats will continue to inspire all in the music industry.

It ’s amazing when you think that they have been around for four decades —and are still going strong.

I wonder if there is any other local band which has survived as long as the Alleycats.

Terima Kasih-hhh Alleycats, for everything you guys have given to music.

May Loga rest in peace and condolences to his family and D a v id.

Alleycats' Loga succumbs to lung cancer
Mohd Tajudin, Jonathan Chen and Bissme S.

PENANG (June 4, 2007): Alleycats' vocalist Loganathan Arumugam, 54, died in the Mount Miriam Hospital today after battling with lung cancer for eight months.

Arumugam breathed his last at 10.50am with all his close family members by his bedside.

"He was a jolly man all his life and when he left us, he also did it with a smile," said elder brother David in hospital.

Loganathan left behind son Vicnesh, 23, daughter Darsha, 20, and widow Susan Lovie, 41.

"He insisted that he did not want people around him to cry at his death. He was smiling in his last moments on the hospital bed as if he knew that it was his time and he did not want us to be sad," she said.

David said Loga was first diagnosed with lung cancer last October after performing in a hotel in Petaling Jaya as he was coughing badly and had breathing difficulties.

"We were due to release our latest Alleycats album last year but it was postponed due to his illness.
"The album was titled 'Rasa' and he contributed two songs, apart from pieces from composers like M. Nasir and others. Since he is now no longer with us, I am sure he would want us to continue and we will launch the album soon," said David.

"We have won many accolades together with the band since our inception in 1979, among the most notable ones are the first Muzik-Muzik winners award and the latest was the Malaysian Book of Records award for being the longest surviving Pop band in the country," he added.

Loga's body will be cremated according to Hindu rites and the remains will be buried in the Batu Lanchang Hindu cemetery tomorrow morning.

Christopher John Francisco, drummer and percussionist for the Jazzocrats described Loga as a down to earth person who never forgot his friends.

"He was a fun guy to be around with and a good entertainer. Actually, I was just thinking about going to see him later today after my classes as I had heard he was in hospital," said Francisco, better known as Franco in the local music circles.

Fellow musician James Rozells described Loga as a very humble, friendly and talented musician.
"We have lost a good musician - a genuine down to earth person who had no airs at all," Rozells said.
International College of Music head of performance Frank Ong, who used to be the Alleycats bassist for 11 years from 1976, describes his band mate as a very caring person.

"Lo (Loganathan) was a nice guy and a wonderful singer who liked to read a lot. He was a person who really got into the music of the 1970s and 1980s," Ong said.

The Capricorn Connection managing partner Paul Augustin, who used to watch the Alleycats perform in the late 1970s said that an era in the Malaysian music scene had now closed with the passing of Loganathan.

"Loganathan and the Alleycats used to be our inspiration back in the day. I remember going for their performances as a high school student when they used to perform in Penang," Augustin said.

Fellow musician Jack Mohd, bassist for the Jazzocrats described Loganathan as a "brilliant and talented singer who was always smiling".

Fellow friend and ex-band mate Francis Khor said Loganathan would be greatly missed by those in the music community in Malaysia.

Khor, who was the band's keyboardist for 10 years in the early 1980s added that he was sorry to hear that Loga had to leave in such sudden circumstances.
Fellow musician Din of the band Crosstown said he and Loganathan grew up together and that the latter could adapt to all styles of music as a singer.

The artiste association Karyawan's president Freedie Fernandez said: "It is passing of era. They are unique with their music and their presentation with their Afros hair-style. The music they make have been memorable."

Ella, the rock queen, was speechless and shocked when contacted. "I am a big fan of Alleycats. I knew he was sick but I didn't know his illness was very serious."

What she admired of Alleycats is the close bond that brothers had. "They have not let success come between them," she said.

8TV CEO and musician Ahmad Izam Omar said the Alleycats was epitome of a hard working band
"They have done great songs that we could hum to," he said.

The diva Anita Sarawak said she doesn't know Alleycats personally but "I have heard of their great music.

"They have contributed a lot to the music industry. Last week we lost the veteran actress Kasma Booty. This week we are losing another talented soul."

Alleycats tidak akan berkubur
Oleh SHAZRYN MOHD. FAIZAL

NAMA Loga mungkin kurang dikenali oleh peminat muzik generasi baru tetapi bagi orang lama yang berumur antara 40-an dan 50-an, nama itu pernah menjadi satu fenomena di zaman mereka melalui kumpulan Alleycats.

http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/2480/hi02bigag5.jpg

Gambar terbaru kumpulan Alleycats bersama mendiang Loga. - Gambar ihsan Universal Music.

Buktinya lagu-lagu seperti Senandung Semalam, Sekuntum Mawar Merah Sebuah Puisi, Hingga Akhir Nanti, Kerana, Sampaikan Salam dan sebagainya sentiasa menjadi pilihan peminat.

Gebang: Hentikan firasat hasad dengki, contohilah perjuangan Alleycats
Oleh Roslen Fadzil

...
Sebenarnya ketika sedang menaiki ERL dari KLIA menuju KL Sentral selepas pulang dari Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, petang Ahad lalu, saya menerima SMS daripada Cikgu Fatimah Abu Bakar, tenaga pengajar AF. Dia memaklumkan bahawa baru saja pulang melawat Loga di hospital berkenaan bersama suaminya, Syed Zainal Rashid. Kata Cikgu Fati keadaan Loga begitu kritikal sekali.

Nyata karya M Nasir membuatkan nama Alleycats semakin gagah.

Industri seni muzik tanah air kehilangan sebutir lagi permata. Ikuti komen penggiat seni tanah air atas pemergian beliau.

Dia rupanya teman rapat Susan, isteri mendiang sejak bangku sekolah lagi. Hendak jadikan cerita pada keesokan harinya (Isnin) Loga makin tenat. Keadaannya cukup menyayat hati.

Saya teringat dulu, kerana terlalu sibuk menjaga skrip David, dia sampai tersasul menyebut perkataan calon menjadi “colan-colan” ketika mereka menjadi penyampai untuk Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM).

“David dan Loga juga macam belangkas. Mereka sangat rapat.

“Berita kematian Loga cukup menyedihkan saya.

Alleycats' sweet legacy

One half of the Alleycats duo, Loganathan Arumugam, passed away early this month, having lost his battle with lung cancer. He would have been 54 next month.
Alleycats was formed in 1969 and started playing in clubs around the country before signing a recording deal with PolyGram Records in 1978.

In case you've never heard of PolyGram, it was a recording powerhouse with the likes of Headwind and Search in its stable, giving the likes of EMI and WEA (later Warner Music) a run for their money.

That same year, Alleycats recorded its first Malay album, Terima Kasih, co-produced by a certain M. Nasir, and the band never looked back.

The MTV generation may not know this enduring music heavyweight, but then again, Alleycats came from a different era when talent and craft were more important than all the glitzy promos and glossy video clips.

There was never anything ostentatious about Alleycats - just two guys with slightly ridiculous Afro hair-dos, belting all those catchy numbers and occasionally wiggling their bums.

Being the band leader and lead vocalist, David was probably the more popular one. Loga was quite happy to play the wingman, lending his vocals, shaking the tambourine and doing those funny little jigs of his. But both have come to define Alleycats' repertoire, and each won't be complete without the other.

I remember listening one of Alleycats' early songs called Kuala Lumpur when I was growing up in a little kampung in Kota Baru. The song conjured up a picture of a faraway, magical place where all the action was.

I remember being impressed by the images I saw in the movies - the black-and-yellow KL taxis, the mini buses, the hustle and bustle, and everything else that had come to define KL. I listened to the song again over the weekend, and the memories came rushing back.

It was like being seven or eight again, dreaming all those dreams of making it to the "big league" someday.

Alleycats became a household name with eventually something like 30 albums to its credit. Those early M. Nasir tunes propelled the group to fame and stardom, making it one of Malaysia's favourite bands. The 1980s was its peak with hits like Sampaikan Salam, Nota Terakhir, Suara Kekasih, Sekuntum Mawar Merah Sebuah Puisi, Andainya Aku Pergi Dulu, Layang-Layang Terputus Talinya, Kerana Kau, Seribu Bintang and Setahun Sudah Berlalu. My favourite tunes were actually Senandung Semalam and Jika Kau Bercinta Lagi, and they are slightly more old-fashioned love songs compared with the rest of the band's hits. I love the vocals, soaring chorus and everything else about the tunes. Legend has it that M. Nasir stopped writing songs for them after that because Alleycats kept reading from lyric sheets during concerts rather than memorising the lyrics properly.

Nevertheless, Alleycats continued to release albums in the 1990s and beyond, although it never really achieved the heights of its crazy 80s heyday.

I can't say that Alleycats was my favourite band when I was growing up, but its music formed a big part of my background all those years ago. When Loga died, there was a steady stream of tributes amid the outpouring of grief. I think people are bidding him (and Alleycats) farewell, as much as they are bidding farewell to their own childhood and adolescence, lost innocence, and younger days.

To Alleycats, thank you for the memories.

Terima kaseyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!
